Azaleas and Rhododendrons

The Potomac Valley Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society is proud to sponsor its annual flower show at the 2004 Azalea Society National Convention. All Convention attendees and members of the Potomac Valley Chapter are invited to exhibit azalea sprays and rhododendron trusses at this juried event, which will be held at the Comfort Inn, Bowie, Md. Convention attendance is not required for members to participate. Special recognition of the ‘Best of’ azalea entries will be displayed at ASA Banquet on Saturday evening.

Entries will be accepted on Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m., and on Friday from 6:30 to 8 a.m and from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on either side of the garden tours. Judging will begin promptly at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and no entries will be accepted after that time. The Flower Show will be open to the public at 9 to 11 p.m. following the Friday evening program and again on Saturday.

ENTRY RULES

  1. Only members of the American Rhododendron Society and the Azalea Society of America may exhibit. No fee.
  2. Only one entry of a variety may be made in each section by any individual. However, any number of different varieties may be made in a section except for Class 12.0 where entry numbers are limited.
  3. Rhododendron and azalea entries exhibited must be grown and wintered outdoors under ordinary garden conditions, with the exception of Class 10.0 for Tropical or Greenhouse Specimens.
  4. Rhododendron and azaleas entries exhibited must have been in the possession of the exhibitor for at least six months.
  5. Azaleas and small leaf lepidote rhododendrons (scaly series) shall be a single stem or spray not longer than 15 inches in height or width above the container.
  6. Sprays may not be artificially constrained in any way.
  7. Large leaf elepidote rhododendrons (non-scaly series) shall be a single cut truss with a single bud. The truss does not have to be fully opened.
  8. A sweepstakes award shall be made to the exhibitor with the most cumulative points determined as follows:
    Best Azalea in show 8 points
    Best Rhododendron in show 8 points
    Best in a class 5 points
    Blue Ribbon in a section 3 points
    Red Ribbon in a section 2 points
    White Ribbon in a section 1 point
    Special Award 5 points
  9. Entries may be received on Thursday, May 6, from 4 - 7 p.m. or on Friday, May 7, from 6:30 – 8:00 a.m. or from 4 - 5:30 p.m. Classification and placement will be by committee.
  10. Judging will start at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and no exhibitors will be admitted during judging. All judges decisions are final.
  11. Exhibits and ribbons may be claimed after the program on Saturday evening, May 8, or on Sunday morning, May 9. Items not claimed will be destroyed.
